He was born to generations of weavers and raised in the northern French commune Bohain, famous for its luxury fabrics. The early exposure to textiles strongly shaped his visual language, his sense of colour and patterns. After having studied law, Matisse decided to fully commit to painting at the beginning of the century. His breakthrough in the arts came 1904 with his dynamic works of clashing colours, which had him derided with the epithet “Fauves” (wild beasts). The art movement known as Fauvism of this period determined the following stages of his career, from the abstract paintings in the 1910s to the more decorative interiors of the 1920s, up to the cut-outs art in his last years.

Born 1881 in Spain and drawing from an early age, he later moved to Paris where he established his studio. Picasso’s progression in his early work is largely categorized by predominant colour schemes: His Blue Period (1901-1904) features motifs from everyday Parisian life, followed by the more lyrical Rose Period. Subsequently, Picasso transitioned to the avant-garde Cubist art movement, that he founded together with Georges Braque in France among others. In Cubism, picture elements are broken into pieces and then rearranged in an abstract manner. The Cubist movement fundamentally changed the face of European painting and sculpting styles and further impacted music, literature, and architecture. It further inspired further art movements like Dada, Constructivism, Futurism in other European countries. After his death in 1973, Picasso left a plethora of artworks of an astonishing range, besides paintings and drawings including ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and collage. Throughout his career, he produced over 20,000 pieces of art.
- [Miró](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/joan-miro/) - Spanish Catalan artist Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) is famous for his works in painting, sculpture, and ceramics. His work is strongly influenced by his hometown Barcelona, the scenic seaside, and the distinct style of that area. From early on, he was exposed to the arts through his parents’ professions: His mother was a goldsmith, father worked as a watchmaker. Miro attended business school as well as art school, but fully devoted his time to art after recovering from a severe typhoid illness. His early style was inspired by the art of Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. In 1981, Miró set up his first solo exhibition at the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona. Five years later, Miró joined the Surrealist movement in Paris. The poetic nature of Miró’s work fits well within the dream-like automatism of the group. He persistently and radically experimented with non-objectivity and explored the subconscious and childlike, manifesting in geometric shapes, pictorial signs, biomorphic forms. Many of his works in different media exhibit semi-abstracted objects, soon earned international acclaim. Miró’s work has been associated to be a form of Surrealism but also veering towards Expressionism and Fauvism. However, his images display a visual vocabulary unmistakably of its own. As a manifestation of Catalan pride, museums in Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca were dedicated to his work in the 1970s and 1980s.
- [Schiele](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/egon-schiele/) - Austrian painter Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) was a figurative painter of the early 20th century and an early exponent of Expressionism. He is best known for his artwork depicting erotic themes and sexuality, using an expressive line. He was born in the Austrian town of Tulln as one of seven children. However, he was the only surviving boy among three sisters. When Schiele was only 14 years old, his father died of syphilis. From early on, Schiele drew obsessively and later took classes at the Academy in Vienna, where he became a protégé of Gustav Klimt. He was further strongly influenced by the work of Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, further refining his fluid line and the twisted body shapes characteristic for his paintings. During World War I, Schiele chose to paint in larger formats and added more details to his compositions. His military service, however, limited the time spent on art, although he was still exhibiting successfully in art shows in Berlin, Zürich, Prague, and Dresden. At the age of 28 years, he succumbed to the Spanish flu.
- [Pollock](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/jackson-pollock/) - American painter Jackson Pollock (1912 – 1955) was one of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism and the New York School. He is best known for his large action drip paintings, which he produced between 1947 and 1952, created by pouring and manipulating liquid paint atop canvases set on the floor. Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming and grew up in Arizona and California. In 1928 he began to study painting at the Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. In 1930 he started studying under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York. At this time the murals of José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera had a strong impact on Pollock. He found jobs contributing to the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project and in David Alfaro Siqueiros’s experimental workshop in New York in the mid-1930s. He was supported by Peggy Guggenheim during the 1940s who gave him a contract lasting half a decade, which permitted him to devote all his time to art. His was able to stage his first solo show at Guggenheim’s Art of This Century, New York in 1943. Prior to 1947 Pollock’s work reflected the influence of Pablo Picasso and Surrealism. During the early 1940s he contributed paintings to several exhibitions of Surrealist and abstract art, including Natural, Insane, Surrealist Art (1943) at Art of This Century, and Abstract and Surrealist Art in America (1944), organized by Sidney Janis at the Mortimer Brandt Gallery, New York. While prior to 1947 Pollock’s work reflected the influence of Surrealism as well as Pablo Picasso, as well as of his artist wife Lee Krasner, by the mid-1940s he began painting in an entirely abstract manner. He liberated himself from painting at the easel by putting unstretched canvas on the floor. Developing his signature “drip style” which he is most famous for today, he explored the usage of sticks and knives to splatter paint or pouring paint directly from the can onto the canvas. In line with Surrealist notions of the automatic painting and the expression of the subconscious, he created decisive foundations for the further development of Abstract Expressionism and contemporary art in general. IN 1950, Peggy Guggenheim organized Pollock’s first European solo exhibition at the Museo Correr, in Venice, while critic Clement Greenberg organized his first retrospective at Bennington College, Vermont. Pollock further participated in numerous group exhibitions including the Venice Biennale in 1950. Pollock struggled with mental health issues and suffered several nervous breakdowns throughout his life. He got psychiatric treatment for alcoholism seeing Jungian psychologists and was institutionalized several times. Under the influence of alcohol, he was killed in an automobile accident on August 11, 1956, in East Hampton.
- [Magritte](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/rene-magritte/) - René Magritte (1898 – 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He is best known for his thought-provoking surrealist images presenting objects in an unusual context, having viewers question their perceptions of reality. Magritte was born to a wealthy manufacturer father. In 1912, his mother committed suicide by drowning herself in the River Sambre, which is said to have influenced Magritte’s use of imagery in his later work. Magritte started drawing lessons at the age of 10 and later studied at the Academie des Beaux-Art located in Brussels. However, he found the lessons uninspiring and left after two years. His paintings at that time reflected cubist influences close to Pablo Picasso’s approach, until he discovered Surrealism as his preferred style. In 1927, Magritte had his first solo-exhibition at a gallery in Brussels, which was strongly criticized by the public. Depressed by the failure, he moved to Paris where he became involved in the Surrealist group. Together with artists like Salvador Dalí, de Chirico, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso, he exhibited at the Parisian Goemans Gallery. He moved back to Brussels after three years, celebrated his first solo exhibition in the United States at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York 1936, later at the London Gallery in 1938. Today, Magritte’s work is being showcased regularly in retrospective exhibitions, most recently at the Centre Georges Pompidou (2016–2017).
- [Kandinsky](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/wassily-kandinsky/) - Wassily (Vasily) Kandinsky (1866 – 1944) is known as one of the pioneers of abstract modern art. He was born in in Moscow to upper-class parents of mixed ethnic origins. At an early age, Kandinsky showed a rare sensitivity towards music and the arts, which his father strongly supported. Kandinsky decided to study law, ethnography, and economics, and started successfully lecturing at the university. Despite his success as an educator, he fully focused on the arts and attended art school in Munich at the age of 30. There he studied under Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts. Introduced to the artistic avant-garde, he later co-founded the artist’s association and school “Phalanx”, opposing conservative views of the traditional art institutions. Kandinsky familiarized himself with the growing Expressionist movement travelling through Europe and on this basis developed his own style. Kandinsky came to the notion that only total abstraction could offer profound, transcendental expression. Contrary, copying from nature would interfere with this process. His mature pictorial language only loosely related to the outside world, and instead expressed the artist’s inner experience. The development of this concept can be seen in his three artistic phases, moving from his early, representational pictures full of symbolism to operatic compositions, and finally to his late, geometric flat planes of colour. Kandinsky’s ideas influenced European artists strongly, including his later students at the Bauhaus to the Abstract Expressionists in the second half of the 20th century.
- [Monet](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/claude-monet/) - French painter Claude Monet (1840 – 1926) was a key figure of the impressionist movement which started in the second half of the 19th century. During his long career, Monet unswervingly focused on depicting leisure activities and plein air landscape painting. Born in Paris, his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy when Claude was 5 years old. From early on, he was determined to become an artist and was supported by his mother, who was a singer, in this endeavour. He was educated at Le Havre secondary school of the arts and attended drawing lessons. During a seven-year period of military service in Algeria, he only had little time for painting, but fully dedicated himself to the arts after he became a student of Charles Gleyre in Paris, where he met fellow artists Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir among others. They shared a new approach to art, promoting depicting the effects of light en pleinair with rapid brush strokes and broken colour. In an independent exhibition with Camille Pissarro, Renoir, and others in 1874, Monet’s painting “Impression, Sunrise” drew scorn for the unfinished appearance of its loose handling and indistinct forms by art critics. However, the artists received the criticism as confirmation and subsequently called themselves “Impressionists”. Monet committed himself to painting the French countryside and, after having purchased a house in Giverny, painting water lilies – some of his motives, which are most widely known today. He would adopt the mothed of painting the same scene multiple times as to capture light and seasonal changes. Years after Monet’s death, his home and garden with the waterlily pond were bequeathed to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1966. Today, Monet is widely considered to have led the way to 20th century modernism by his unique style.
- [Klimt](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/gustav-klimt/) - Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862 –1918) was the most prominent member of the Vienna Secession movement. He is best known for his paintings, murals, and other objects d’art, which often incorporate gold leaf and feature the female body as main subject. At an early stage of his artistic career, he painted architectural decorations in a traditional style. When later cultivating a more personal style through the influence of Japanese prints, he was criticized for the use of eroticism, which was perceived as being pornographic. Klimt did not accept any further public commissions but proved himself highly successful with his Golden Phase symbolist paintings. In his art-work, he incorporated lavishly painted figures with allusions to sexuality and the human psyche, often carrying messages of sexual liberation, pleasure, and mental burden. Some of his murals featuring voluptuous nudes scandalised the Viennese elite. However, to many artists, including fellow Austrian artist Egon Schiele, he was an important mentor.
- [van Gogh](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/vincent-van-gogh/) - Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) is one of the renowned post-impressionist artists, best known for his striking use of colour, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms. As a son of a pastor, the Dutch artist war brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere. After working unsuccessfully as a clerk at a bookstore, as a salesman, and as a preacher in Belgium where he was dismissed for overzealousness, he decided to study art and become an artist. His goal was to bring happiness to other people by creating beauty. In 1886 van Gogh went to Paris to join his brother who was the manager of Goupil’s gallery. There he met other influential artists like Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and tried to copy their Impressionists’ style. On this basis, he developed his own bolder style using bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork. Within just ten years, he created over 2,100 artworks, including still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and self-portraits, contributing to the foundations of modern art. Much is known about his mental struggles, self-doubts and sensibility through extensive published letters. He was not commercially successful at his lifetime. Most historians agree, that his suicide at the age of 37 came after years of depression and poverty.
- [Escher](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/m-c-escher/) - Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is internationally appreciated for his graphic art today. He is best known for his woodcuts, mezzotints, and lithographs, featuring mathematical and “impossible” objects, in which he explored symmetry, perspective, infinity, and reflection. Born as the youngest son of a civil engineer, he was a sickly child and had poor grades at school failing second grade. However, he excelled in drawing and had a strong sense for observing nature. Early in his career, he drew inspiration from plants and insects. Travelling to Italy and Spain where he concentrated on sketching architecture and townscapes, his interest in mathematical structures became stronger. Even though he considered himself as a mathematical layman, his work became well known among scientists and mathematicians, and, starting in the 1960s, also in the popular culture. However, despite popular interest, Escher was for a long time neglected in the art world. While his graphic techniques were respected, his work was considered too intellectual, narrative, and insufficiently lyrical, contrasting with the principles of contemporary art movements. A first retrospective exhibition was held in his home country Netherlands when he was already 70 years old. In the 21st century, his art is being celebrated world-wide.
- [Renoir](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/pierre-auguste-renoir/) - Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919) is one of the last representatives of a tradition that runs directly from Rubens to Watteau. The French artist was a leading painter of the Impressionist art movement, famed for depicting female beauty and charming scenes. Coming from humble beginnings, he became an apprentice to a porcelain painter where he learned to copy designs and using imitation as his learning tool. After the family moved to Paris, the young Renoir had the chance to study and copy the masterpieces hanging at the Louvre. His talent allowed him to enter the famous art school Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he met other emerging talents like Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. He was a founding member of the Impressionist movement. However, he ceased to exhibit with the group and starting in the 1880s, he developed a monumental, classically inspired style influencing many other artists like Pablo Picasso.
- [Seurat](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/georges-seurat/) - French artist Georges Seurat (1859 – 1891) is best known for his Neo-Impressionism art style of Pointillism. He was born into an affluent family in Paris and educated in conventional academic painting at the École des Beaux-Arts, copying from old masters. After having attended military service, he further developed his unique style, which was influenced by the Impressionist use of colour and light. However, unlike Impressionist art, Seurat would clearly outline his figures, as can be seen in his monumental picture “Bathers at Asnières” and use almost mathematical precision depicting figures. After his work got rejected by the Paris Salon, he formed a new organisation, where he influenced several fellow artists with his pointillist and chromoluminarism style. Seurat started his most famous painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” in 1884, which would take him two years. When he died at only 31 caused by disease, he left unfinished work behind. Today, Seurat’s paintings are highly appreciated for combining sensibility and accurateness with logical abstraction and mathematical precision.
- [Rothko](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/rothko/) - Rothko Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) is closely associated with the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, a circle of painters that emerged during the 1940s as a collective voice in American art. During his career spanning five decades, he created a new form of abstract art. Rothko was born in Daugavpils, Latvia, into a highly educated family and was provided with a secular and political upbringing. At the age of five he went to cheder, where he studied the Talmud. With Jews being blamed for many of the evils that befell Russia, Rothko’s early childhood was dominated by fear. The family emigrated from Russia to the United States in 1913, where Rothko went to high school in Portland, Oregon. Outstanding results enabled him to attend Yales on a scholarship, but he decided to drop out two years later. He started a satirical magazine lampooning the school’s bourgeois tone and finally found his place in New York where he studied at Parsons School of Design under painter Arshile Gorky, who shared Rothko’s interest in biomorphic forms of European Surrealism. For Rothko, these forms would ultimately give way to the floating zones of colour over coloured grounds, the colour field paintings, for which he is best known for. Rothko spent the rest of his career exploring the limitless possibilities of layering variously sized and coloured rectangles onto fields of colour. Towards the end of the 1960s, Mark Rothko’s health was in decline due to anxiety related drinking habits. He survived an aneurism but continued an unhealthy lifestyle despite the doctor’s orders. To put less strain on his body, he reduced the size of his canvases and switched from oil to acrylic paint. At the age of 66, the chronically depressed artist committed suicide, leaving behind a body of work that brought him commercial and critical success during his lifetime.
- [Cézanne](https://pigment-pool.com/product-category/modernist-artists/cezanne/) - Paul Cézanne, a pivotal figure in the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to the 20th century’s early Cubism, was born in 1839 in Aix-en-Provence, France. His work lays the groundwork for the disruptive changes in painting that emerged in the early 1900s. Known for his distinctive brushstrokes and use of color, Cézanne’s techniques challenged conventional values of painting in his time, influencing the artistic trajectory of many who followed. Cézanne’s exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired artists like Picasso and Matisse. He was not prolific in public or social spheres, often working in isolation, which deeply infused his works with personal expression and introspection.
